Merrill Goozner provides overall editorial direction for Modern Healthcare and oversees editorial content for its magazine, newsletters and website. During 30 years as a journalist and educator, he has been a foreign, national and chief economics correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and professor of journalism at New York University. He is the author of The $800 Million Pill: The Truth Behind the Cost of New Drugs (University of California Press, 2004), and he has contributed to numerous publications, including the New York Times, the American Prospect, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and the Fiscal Times. Goozner earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and a bachelor's in history from the University of Cincinnati, where he received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008. He joined Modern Healthcare in 2012.


  1. Sad story and I’m glad he got help. However, for a “policy wonk” he seems to be missing a major point. Neither party is purposing to abandon those in the most need. The alternative plan, as outlined by Docs4patientcare is to give control of those dollars to the patients. This liberates the patients from having to sit in a government building begging for support in the first place. The premium of their insurance is supported based on need, and as Mitch Daniels has shown with Medicaid in Indiana the patient does a much better job managing those funds then does the government.
